Diabetes Management Tips For Seniors

diabetes

Learn how manage your diabetes as you age.

As you age, you become more and more at risk of developing diabetes which is when the body produces an insufficient amount of insulin causing glucose levels to rise to an unhealthy level.  Around 25 percent of all seniors have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but only 8 percent of all Americans have the condition.  So, seniors make up a disproportionate number of individuals with diabetes in the United States.  It is critical that you know how to care for the condition if you are a senior.  Luckily, there are few diabetes management tips you can follow to make living with the condition much easier.

Monitor Your Blood Sugar

When it comes to living with diabetes, it is critical that you monitor your blood sugar levels on  daily basis.  There are a variety of way to check your blood sugar level so should always know if you need to increase or reduce sugar intake.  For some seniors, it might become increasingly difficult to control your blood sugar, so it is vital that you consult with your doctor.  Your doctor is the best resource when it comes to diabetes management.

Keep Track of Medications

It is extremely important that you take your medications as prescribed, especially if you are treating health issues outside of diabetes.  As you get older, it might become difficult to remember to complete specific tasks such as when to take your medication.  It is critical that you set reminders on your cell phone or electronic device so that you can take your medication at the same time every day.  Setting reminders on your phone will prevent you from forgetting to take your medication.

Stay Active

One of the best ways to lower your blood sugar levels is to exercise in some capacity whether it is walking, running, or swimming.  According to The American Diabetes Association, you should exercise at least 30 minutes a day five day a week.
