Medicare Open Enrollment is here, which means that from now until December 7th, seniors can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or switch from their current original Medicare plan. We’ve written a lot about the many benefits of a Medicare Advantage plan which could make it the right healthcare option for you. This week, we’ll cover how to find Medicare Advantage plans in your area, and what to look at when you’re doing your research. And of course, don’t forget that Global Premier Benefits can help you with all of your questions regarding Medicare and healthcare for seniors!
How to Find a Medicare Advantage Plan in Your Area
The first step is to visit Medicare’s official website. There, you’ll find a green icon that says “Find health & drug plans.” Click this to begin.
Enter Your Information
You will now be prompted to enter some information about yourself. This includes your zip code (so you can be shown plans in your area) and the drugs you take (so you can be shown plans that cover these drugs). When you reach the page that says “Refine your plan results” be sure to check the box that says “Medicare Health Plans with drug coverage” so you can be shown these plans. Now, click the box that says “Continue to Plan Results” to see what Medicare Advantage plans are available in your area!
Analyzing Medicare Advantage Plans
First, make sure you’re being shown all available plans. You can do this by clicking the icon at the top of the page that toggles between showing you 10 plans and all plans. The page will order the plans by their annual cost. Naturally you should consider this factor in your decision, but use the following criteria as well in making your choice.
Medicare Advantage Plans are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the best. Plans that are rated at 4 or 5 stars also get extra funds from the government to spend on your benefits, so keep this in mind as you browse.
You can click on a plan to get a detailed description of expenses like co-pays, premiums, and deductibles. In addition to these numbers, take a look at the annual out-of-pocket limit, which is the most you’ll pay out-of-pocket before your plan takes over for all expenses.
Most Medicare Advantage plans have networks of providers that you can use. Click on the individual plan to get a list of doctors that participate in the plan. A link to the plan’s website should direct you to information about which hospitals participate as well.
Unlike original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans often come with dental and/or vision coverage. If a plan has dental or vision coverage, there will be an icon with a D or V to indicate this next to the plan. By clicking on the individual plan, you can find more detailed information on this coverage.
