Living Well on Medicare: How to Manage Diabetes
What diabetes services does Medicare cover?
Medicare part B provides services to help older adults learn to live with and manage diabetes by covering up to 10 hours of outpatient diabetes self-management training (DSMT). These trainings cover such topics as diet, nutrition, and how to properly monitor your blood sugar. Generally, one hour of one-on-one training is provided, followed by up to 9 hours of group training. In order to qualify for these services, you must provide a note from your doctor stating that you are at risk for developing complications related to your diabetes. Your Part B deductible will be applied to the trainings and you will also pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.
What can you do to manage diabetes on your own?
Under the guidance of your doctor or other members of your healthcare team, there are many ways in which your lifestyle choices can help manage diabetes. Doctors agree that diet and exercise are key components to living a healthy life with diabetes. Choose foods that are low in saturated fats, carbohydrates, trans fats, salt, and sugar, and aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes three times per week. If 30 minutes sounds like a long time, try going out for a 10 minute walk three times per day. Be sure to check in with your doctor before beginning any exercise regimen or diet plan to ensure that it will support your health.
