How Eyesight Can Be Affected As You Age

eye health, glaucoma

Eye health becomes very important as we age.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma is common in people who are 55 or older, but there are other disorders such as cataracts that may also be affecting your eyesight. If you’ve noticed changes in your eyesight within the past few years, there could be a number of causes, so here are just a few of the common issues senior citizens face when it comes to their eyes.

Glaucoma

This disease is caused by a massive amount of built up pressure in the eye. Your vision worsens as a direct result of the optic nerve being damaged. When glaucoma is caught early on, there are effective treatments available, however if not treated early, glaucoma can lead to vision loss. That is why it is very important for your eye doctor to examine your eyes for glaucoma if you are over a certain age, and if someone in your family has the disease, as it can also be hereditary.

Cataracts

Fairly common in seniors, cataracts occur when the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Cataracts can be easily treated with a simple outpatient surgery. As one of the most common operations in the United States, cataracts are not something that you have to live with forever, such as glaucoma.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

As the leading cause of vision impairment in seniors over 70 years of age, ARMD is a degenerative disease, as it’s name suggests, that affects the macula, which is a small spot on the eye located in the central area of the retina, responsible for sight. ARMD almost never results in a complete loss of vision for those who have it. However, sufferers may find themselves struggling to do everyday activities due to their limited eye sight. Oftentime, ARMD can be treated with special laser surgeries.
