The costs of senior living can be expensive. If you are a veteran and you are worried about how you’ll pay for your senior care, you may be eligible for VA benefits that can help pay for your future. It is estimated that nearly 70% of veterans don’t realize that their benefits can help them pay for senior care. Don’t let you or your loved ones be one of them by learning what you need to know in today’s blog!
Nursing home allowance
Both veterans and their spouses are eligible for assistance to help them with the costs of nursing homes. A veteran qualifies for up to $2,019, while their spouse would qualify for an allowance of up to $1,094. However, these benefits do not have to be used for nursing homes and the allowance can be used for in-home care and assisted living facilities as well. This benefit is called Aid and Assistant, and because it is need-based not all veterans will qualify. Instead, it is meant to help those who are in need of assistance to pay for the kind of care they need, whether because they are housebound or because they need the attendance of a qualified healthcare assistant.
Do you qualify?
There are a few qualifying factors that will determine whether or not you are eligible to collect VA benefits to pay for your senior care. First, you must have served at least one day during a time of war. You must also be considered “totally disabled,” though this term is automatically applied to any vet when they turn 65. There are also income restrictions: You’ll generally need to earn less than $23,000/year to qualify and you cannot have more than $80,000 in available assets. To learn more, contact your local VA office or speak to a knowledgeable insurance agent who is experienced with veterans benefits.
