3 Stress Management Tips For Seniors

senior stress

Learn how to manage all the stress in your life effectively.

Stress seems always to creep up on us regardless of age, and it may seem difficult to manage.  Getting older can bring on its own stressors from medical issues to financial worries during retirement.  If you do not learn to manage your stress properly you can develop even worse medical issues and feel depressed.  Fortunately, there are a few simple ways combat stress and feel more relaxed.

Meditation and Quietness

One of the best ways to reduce stress and calm racing thoughts is to meditate, which is much easier than you might think.  It has been proven to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure levels along with improving your immune system.  All you have to do is set aside a couple of minutes once or twice a day and practice deep breathing in quiet, comfortable space.  There guided meditation apps available on your smartphone, so de-stressing is as easy as opening your phone.

Get Out There and Socialize

According to The Mayo Clinic, those who have a strong social network of friends and family are less stressed and live longer lives.  So, it is important as you age to continue to socialize with those around you and maintain a variety of social groups.  Seek those with similar interests as you and join local community groups that revolve those interests.  Try to have dinner or get coffee with friends at least once a week.  Sustaining a sense of community reduces the chances of memory loss and loneliness.

Watch What You Eat

One of the easiest ways to reduce stress is to eat, but it is all about you choose to consume.  Avoid eating processed foods and make sure to start your day with a healthy meal.  Eating breakfast has been shown to be a mood stabilizer and promotes healthy aging.  Try to consume foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, to help reduce stress and anxiety.  Maintaining a healthy diet is beneficial to the mind as well as the body.
