3 Tips to Improve Sleep as You Age

Nothing is better than a deep, restful sleep but as we age this seems harder and harder to achieve.  Sleep is a necessity for a healthy body, but a lack of sleep can have negative effects on depression and to even dementia in older adults.  According to the National Institute of Health,  13 percent of men and 36 percent of women over the age of 65 find it hard to even fall asleep.  There are several things you can do to improve your sleep pattern and awake more restful.

Identify Any Health Problem or Issues

As you age, your body naturally produces less melatonin causing fragmented sleep and you will wake up frequently during the night.  But any underlying health issue can inhibit your ability to sleep even further, so it is important to treat those issues.  Stress, anxiety, and depression are common issues that cause sleep deprivation.  As we age, our medication intake usually increases so be sure to check if those medications have any side effects on your sleep pattern.

Healthy Diet and Exercise

Taking care of your body by eating well and staying active can improve your ability to sleep through the night.  It is important to be cautious of what you put in your body right before you go to bed.  Caffeinated drinks like coffee and soda as well as alcohol can increase your energy making it difficult to fall asleep.  Eating foods with a high sugar content and refined carbs like pasta can cause wakefulness throughout the night.  As you age, it might be more difficult to stay active but adding a little aerobic activity throughout your day release chemicals in the brain can improve your slumber.  Taking a water aerobics class aimed at older adults or just swimming a couple laps is a great way to loosen up the body.  

A Comfortable Sleeping Space

End the night in a quiet room and nice bed to give you the ability to sleep soundly.  Try a white noise machine to block out loud sounds like barking dogs or the television.  Block out all the lights in your room and turn up the A/C to promote sleep.
