Home Safety Tips For Seniors Living With Dementia

You need to be careful when you are living at home with dementia.

If you or a loved one is currently living with dementia, it can be a stressful situation for all parties involved.  Depending on their current stage of dementia, a person may not have the mental and physical abilities they once used to have.  Although, having dementia doesn’t mean you have to move out of your current living situation.  With the right precautions and changes made to your home, you can live happily and safe in your home.  There are few home safety tips you should follow if you are currently living with dementia.

Lighting Is Key

It is crucial that you have all entry and walkways around your home well-lit especially at night.  Make sure to install night-lights and motion sensors next to your bedroom and bathroom in case you get up in the middle of the night.  People with dementia tend to forget to turn on and off the lights, so it is wise to have lights that turn on and off automatically.  Having a home that well-lit is the most effective way to avoid accidents in the home for seniors with dementia.

Remove Tripping Hazards

Falling is incredibly common among seniors in general and can lead to serious injuries easily.  It is critical that you go around your home and make sure all of the walkways are clutter-free.  It is vital that you remove all loose rugs and end tables from every room to reduce the risk of an accident or injury.  Check to see if all wires are hidden or place strategically to avoid all foot traffic.

Make the Bathroom as Safe As Possible

It is critical that you check your bathroom or your loved one’s bathroom who is living with dementia.  Make sure they have a walk-in shower, and there are bars for them to grab onto while they are showering.  It is vital that you add texture stickers to wet or slippery surfaces to avoid injury.  The last thing you want is someone living with dementia fall and hurting themselves severely in the shower.
