How to Care For Seniors Living With Dementia

Learn how to care for a senior living with dementia.

Having the responsibility to care anyone can be a challenging task, especially if they are an older adult living with dementia.  Seniors diagnosed with dementia have a biological brain condition that negatively affects their memory and communication skills.  The disorder can progress as far as someone forgetting how to care for themselves.  As a caregiver, it is critical that you know to communicate and engage with a senior who is living with dementia.

Limit Distractions

When trying to get the attention of someone with dementia, you want to prevent as many distractions as possible.  Make sure that the television is off and there is very little background noise.  You want there to be quietness when getting a senior’s attention.  You should have direct contact and address them by their name when communicating.  It is best to get at their physical level to try to get their full attention.

Simple Questions

Depending on the severity of your loved one’s dementia, their communication skills might be limited.  So, when asking them questions, it is essential that they are simple and can be answered with ‘yes’ or “no.’  If you are asking them to select out an item, it is best to show them the choice, so it makes their decision easier to make.  You want to avoid them making difficult decisions that could cause them stress.

Develop A Daily Routine

One of the most effective ways to care for an older adult living with dementia is to develop a daily routine that they can easily complete. You should have a set list of tasks to complete so that each day goes as smoothly as possible.  It will make your loved one feel good to complete goals each day.
