As we age, we are more and more at risk for our health to decline which can leave us in the hands of a caregiver or in a hospital.  One of the most common health conditions that affect older adults is dementia, which is a general term that refers to a decline in mental ability in a person.  There are several symptoms associated with dementia such as memory loss and impaired communication skills.  Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, which can greatly affect a person’s ability to perform everyday tasks.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways you can reduce your risk of developing dementia.

Regular Exercise

One of the most effective ways to reduce your risk for dementia is exercise regularly, specifically focusing on cardiovascular exercise.  According to the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation, regularly exercising can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease up to 50 percent.  You should aim to do at least 150 minutes of cardio and strength training exercise a week. You should focus on improving your balance and coordination which is crucial as you age.  Yoga and tai chi are great exercises to improve your balance and coordination.

Healthy Diet

When trying to prevent dementia, it is important that you learn to improve your diet.  You need to focus on eating healthy foods and limiting your intake of sugar. It is important that you deter from eating processed foods which are usually high in sugar and include unhealthy additives.  Make sure that you increase your consumption of green leafy vegetables which include vitamin-K, found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Improve Your Sleep

It is crucial that you get at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep a night.  Insomnia and sleep deprivation are risk factors for developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  Make sure that you set a regular sleep schedule for yourself and that you make sure that you have a calming environment when you get ready for bed.
