Senior Winter Safety Tips to Keep You Cozy!

How can seniors stay warm and cozy this winter?

The winter can be a perilous time for seniors. Between the freezing temperatures and the threat of snow, there is a lot to contend with. That being said, there are plenty of ways that you can stay safe this winter to ensure a safe and happy holiday. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can keep yourself cozy this winter!

Winter Safety Tip #1: Utilize your layers!

As the temperature continues to drop, you need to make sure that you can handle those freezing temperatures. Warm layers are going to help protect you from the cold. Things like scarves, hats, and gloves are important accessories that make a big difference. You should also consider layering several thin items of clothing when you go outside rather than one big layer. Smaller layers are more effective for collecting and trapping heat.

Winter Safety Tip #2: Shoveling snow requires caution.

If you do choose to shovel snow yourself, you need to be very careful. Shocking, strenuous activity can put a strain on your heart if you aren’t prepared for it, so proceed slowly and take regular breaks. You should also be very careful about falling. Icy walkways are very dangerous. Spread salt out on your walkways regularly and make sure to invest in boots with non-skid soles. If you need a cane to walk, make sure that the rubber tip is fresh and has plenty of traction. To avoid this problem entirely, you can hire someone to help you with shoveling your snow.

Winter Safety Tip #3: Winterize your car!

Before we get a big snow storm, you need to make sure your car is ready. Take it to the shop to have the anti-freeze, tires, and windshield wipers checked or repaired. You should also keep some emergency supplies in your car just in case. This could include things like blankets, booster cables, a flashlight, rock salt, and some snacks. You should also make sure to inform people of where you are and where you are going in case of an emergency.
